The Prostitute – The Business of Survival

Writer: Peter OtaborPeter Otabor

Business! The boon of human existence and the product of sheer ingenuity and necessity. To want more or to have more, business stands as the object of aspiration and accomplishment. Its long history telling the tale of its birth, existence and survival.

Prostitution, the age long trade in skin and pleasure where in men lurk in need, lust and desire as they prowl the streets and the strings of the web like predators in search of prey. Demand ever booming, supply unflinching; something to offer and people to buy. Necessity births all things, and out of it survival stands in defiance.

Society the ever gloom reprisal of everything unacceptable, standards of men to govern the moral compasses of men. Irony! Yet in the charade of public deception, people learn, as long as there is a desire, there will always be a need and as long as there is a need, there will always someone or something to satisfy that need, no matter how ugly or gruesome or socially unacceptable.

Opportunity and Survival! Where ever chance lurks opportunity prevails presenting itself as victor and conqueror. Just like every other business, prostitution presents an opportunity for profit. Opportunity that men take advantage of and invest resources in. Morality is a question of choice for them not standard, not guideline. It’s all about business and it’s not personal. Men battling morality against humanity.

To live or to survive! To hold on to the deception or the truth that man must survive by any means necessary. Even through the erosion of self-worth and human dignity. To them these are values we create and hold high and like all things everything has a tipping point. Survival! When the veils of life are all gone and reality hits you in the face uncaring, then you realise the need to survive by any means necessary. It is not the question of social acceptance but rather the need to survive.

Self-worth, the victim of man. Survival soon becomes necessity and like addiction it fuels desire. Once the desire to pleasure to survive reaches its tipping point. It falls into a craving, a need, and an addiction to want absent thought or reason. And like all things of life, it grows sinisterly pervading every meaning until nothing is left of self-worth except pity and a tiny fibre of self hanging on to survive the current siege. And so begins the battle of self on the battle ground of the mind with self-worth in the balance.

Social Acceptance and morality? Tipping point, to accept or not to. Society the hypocritical lot. Patronising in the dark and fighting in the light. Tackling the problem ignoring the cause. Waging the war of morality rather than decadence. Everyman lost in the tunnel of truth and in search of meaning, in search of hope. Each day, the pain is reawakened, the struggle continues, the dilemma pounds to survive or not to. And on and on it goes. Just one more day and it will all be over. But it never ends. This is the business of survival, we are all in it some just deeper than others.
