Greece: On the brink of survival

Writer: Peter OtaborPeter Otabor

To survive or not to! At any cost through any means. The path to survival is a narrow one, one absent thought or reason or the thresholds of morality, one purely run on instinct. Survive! Or perish.

As the financial world comes to term with the Greek’s default, the true concern is what is the way out. Debt or more debt coupled with austerity. The dilemma is simply choosing between the better of the two evils. The great task left to the leader of the ancient city. A daunting task and a perilous path to walk. National interest the glorious charge, in the interest of the people, every decision to the referendum. A referendum of people on the brink of survival who are simply swayed by the fear of uncertainty and the thought of the basic necessities of life. A wise decision or not, but a burden shared, every man to stand and weigh in the future of the nation in thought and in thumbs.

What is the path to economic posterity? How do you achieve wealth for nations? Governance is plagued with the task of brain storming on this reality and bringing to fruition the path to posterity. Every economist to the pen plotting the imaginary to fit the reality. The complex riddles of possibility and resources, the scarcity and the wants, two ends of the divide. In the end, the focal point is growth and development, growing the means and developing the path to sustain and reap fruits off the means. Creating blue oceans of economies, improving comparative advantage and shaking off the traditional sources of revenue. Transforming the nation into a brand that woos investments, deploying structures to sustain such investments and a financial system robust enough to support growth and foster development.

Resolution! Debt or more debt. To solve a crisis with more borrowing, to sustain governance and economy in the now as against tomorrow. Will more financial burden alleviate the problem or delay the wrath of the underlying issues plaguing economies? Survival or sacrificial reforms, those are the cards on the Greece’s table and the dilemma is choosing. For our own good or at our own expense for our own good. To the table of words, to discuss the future or to delay the impending explosion. A quest of survival for the ancient city. The idea of the nation as a self-sustaining entity is lost in the act of sustenance as sovereignty becomes nothing more than physical boundaries. Nations are no longer self-sustaining but rather objects of economic and financial liberation dancing to the piper’s tune.

The drums of austerity resonating loud and loud as people scuttle for help. The terms of the deal, pay what you owe before more debt with the condition of austerity. The path to economic freedom offered on the plate on survival. The nation filled with hope as they weigh their options in the balance. This is their path to liberation, a sacrifice for survival. As leaders ponder on a resolution, the common man’s plight is simply survival. The basic necessities, employment opportunities, cash at hand but these are simply mirage absent the thought of reality. The ripple effect is a nation pushed to the wall and its citizens the victims. What happens when a man needs to survive? It is not a question of morality but necessity. Social evils taking watch as men plunge into the pit in search of hope. Nations bed ridden with so much debt that it is a question of continuous survival. The unending cycle of eternal bondage and madness.

So what is the way out? Is exit from the European Union a much needed resolve for Greece and a crucial test for the union or would sustaining their membership be a benefit to the union. That is the big question playing out.
